The Section 8 rental assistance program is a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) program to help low/very low income family (single or families) with their rent.
The purpose of this program is to give low income families an opportunity to seek housing of their choice that may be close to their work, school, etc. The Crossville Housing Authority Section 8 Department pays a portion, or all, of the rent for participants in the program directly to their landlord each month. Families are responsible for 30% of their income to go toward rent and utilities.
Special Vouchers and Programs Within Section 8 Program
Families participating in the Section 8 program have the opportunity to join the CHA Family Self-Sufficiency program and to achieve homeownership.Mainstream program vouchers enable low income families that have a person with disabilities to lease affordable, private housing of their choice. These families often face difficulties in locating suitable and accessible housing on the private market.
Family Unification vouchers are made available to low income families for whom the lack of adequate housing is a primary factor in the separation, or threat of imminent separation, of children from their parents. It also serves those in the process of reunifying children with their families. Family unification vouchers enable these families to lease or purchase decent, safe and sanitary housing that is affordable in the private housing market.
Shelter Plus Care(S+C)is a program designed to provide housing and supportive services on a long-term basis for homeless persons with disabilities (primarily those with serious mental illness, chronic problems with alcohol and/or drugs, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or related diseases) and their families who are living in places not intended for human habitation (e.g., streets) or in emergency shelters. The program allows for a variety of housing choices, and a range of supportive services funded by other sources, in response to the needs of the hard-to-reach homeless population with disabilities. This program serves the Upper Cumberland region with rental assistance.
